Top 3 Short Filler Cuban Cigars

Short-fillers are cigars too and it is time to end that myth that short-filler cigars have less quality than long-filler ones. In fact, in some cases, that is not even true at all.

You might be asking: if I am at a shop, how can I know which boxes have short-filler cigars in it? That is a question we get all the time and there are 2 signs that are very easy to identify. A short-filler box has the initials “TC” right by the box date. TC initials stand for Tripa Corta, which translated to English means short filler.

The other sign is the price. Short-filler cigars are (most of the time) cheaper than a long-filler cigar.

This article’s intention is to give you our take on the best short-filler cigars out there and what you can expect from each one. Now, you have to understand that we are talking about budget cigars, not top of the shelf ones so don’t go and start saying that you smoked a Behike that was way better than a Por Larrañaga Panetelas because that would be the same as comparing a Bugatti Veyron to a Honda Civic. Both are good but in two very different categories.

Speaking of Por Larrañaga Panetelas, they made the #1 spot on our list which you can fully digest in the paragraphs below.

1. Por Larrañaga Panetelas

This cigar may be the king of short-filler cigars. Its consistency, flavor profile, and overall construction remain unchanged since the early beginnings of the brand. A very humble cigar, with a very low price point, and ideal for a daily smoke. Even the most aficionado of aficionados has nothing against Por Larrañaga because it always delivers. In this case, you can expect notes of cedar, a bit of salted caramel, and a lot of earth and thyme.

The Por Larrañaga Panetelas is a 5.00"x38 short-filler cigar with a bigger body and soul than some long-fillers out there. The burn is always razor-sharp because the ash does not hold on to it that long and, in this case, this is a good thing. Another good thing is the price. For example, at €79 you can get a box of 25 cigars. That’s €3 per cigar and you have to admit that for a Cuban, it is an incredible budget cigar.

2. La Flor de Cano Petit Coronas

This one is quite a surprise. La Flor de Cano is a Habanos SA brand that is almost always under the radar. And we have to be honest with you, they don’t always produce the best cigars. However, the Petit Coronas is one of those cigars that we adore as daily budget cigars. First of all, the presentation is gorgeous, with that nice cedar dress they have in each box of Petit Coronas. Every single cigar we tested always came in perfect in terms of draw and burn. If you are a purist, you can also use the cedar to light your cigar (which we never do and we will explain why in another article).

You might think that a box of short-filler cigars is not worthy of aging, but you would be wrong. With 2–3 years of aging in the box, this small and unpretentious cigar will transform itself and will provide you a very nice smoking session. It comes in a 4.88”x40 size and it is a medium-body cigar. The flavors you can expect are sweet, floral, and grassy.

3. Fonseca Delicias

The Fonseca brand — or marca — is the only one in Habanos’ portfolio that comes in this presentation, a very elegant vegetable white paper layer wrapping the entire cigar. This presentation does not add any special characteristic to the cigars besides looks. Opening a new box of Fonsecas to discover this beautiful presentation is an experience on its own.

If you are a cigar beginner, this might just be the right cigar for you. Its light body and easy to manage size — 4.88”x40 — will provide you a great introduction to what Cuban cigars have to offer. You can expect light woody aromas, black coffee, hay, and pepper. There is also a lot of creaminess and sweetness, making the Fonseca Delicias an ideal morning smoke.
